22 Years of Christmas in April: A CHVFD Tradition

Twenty-two years since the program’s inception in 1989, the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department continues to help our community through the Christmas in April program.

On April 24, 2010 twenty-two (22) members of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department including: new recruits, riding members, administrative, and ladies auxiliairy members participated in the annual Christmas in April project. This valuable community program is something that the department looks forward to every year.

In years past, the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department took the lead on the county fire department’s first battalion house, working side by side with career personnel from Company 5 and occasionally with other career firefighters from a nearby station. Participation in this rewarding program has always been popular with our members – there is something for each one of our members to do and it is just one more way that we can help people in our community!

This year, through the leadership of John Weaver, CHVFD member and House Captain, we were able to secure a project house in our own first due response area. John has served for many years as a chief officer with the department and as a Christmas in April House Captain.

During this year’s project members tackled yard work, planting, painting, repairing sheet rock, removing damaged trees, bushes, and old sections of fence from the yard. Some plumbing work was done prior to the 24th by volunteers from Andrews Air Force Base. New light fixtures were also donated and installed in the home.

The members of the department are proud to participate in the Christmas in April program as a part of our continuing community service efforts. We look forward to participating in next year’s Christmas in April project house.
