President Barack Obama issued a proclamation declaring April 15 – 21, 2012 as “National Volunteer Week.” In celebration of “National Volunteer Week,” the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department presented two members with Special Achievement Awards in recognition of their extraordinary service to the department and the communities we serve.
The first award was presented to Charles E. Miller. Charles joined the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department in 1951. The end of 2011 marked his 60th anniversary with the department. He has served both as the Fire Chief and President of the department. He is currently the Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors. While he is no longer an operational member of the department, he remains very active in the department by participating in fund raising activities, public fire and life safety education and other community service projects, such as Christmas-in-April and the holiday food basket program. His dedication and commitment to the department is an example for others to follow. The Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department thanks Charles for his 60 years of service and looks forward to his continued service.
The second award was presented to John H. Weaver. John joined the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department in 1986. John currently serves as this department’s Deputy Fire Chief. The Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department has actively participated in the Christmas-in-April program since its inception in 1989. On April 28, 2012, the department will take on its 24th consecutive project house. John has always been an active participant in this program and for many of those years has taken on a leadership role by serving as our “House Captain.” However, John’s leadership does not stop there. He has helped the Christmas-in-April program by inspecting homes and developing scopes of work for project houses throughout Prince George’s County. The Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department thanks John for his dedication to this department, his commitment to the community, and compassion for his fellow human beings.

In addition to these award presentations, on Saturday, April 21, the membership gathered for a “Member Appreciation Cook-out” to thank all members for their continued service and dedication to this department over the past year.
