National Volunteer Week 2013 kicks off on Sunday, April 21 and runs through April 27, 2013. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Service.” According to Points of Light, who sponsors the annual event, the “Celebrate Service” theme “honors people who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities.” What better example of this dedication are the men and women who volunteer as firefighters and emergency medical technicians in their communities.
Your fire department, the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department, is made up of these unique problem solvers, who dedicate themselves to protect you and your loved ones. You usually meet them during the worst times and they work to tirelessly to solve the issue. Whether it’s a fire that needs to be put out or someone who needs immediate medical attention, our members respond to give you the help that you need.
Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” For over 100 years, the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department has worked hard to serve the citizens of Capitol Heights and the surrounding communities. What started with a group of thoughtful, committed, and concerned citizens, who came together in 1905, changed the community for the better and moved it forward. Today, we continue to serve the citizens and forge ahead by preparing them to prevent fires and injuries.
While the faces may have changed over the years, the mission is the same – to protect the lives and property and to prevent tragedies from occurring within our community. Our members are a diverse group of individuals who have the desire to serve and one day decided to make that difference in the lives of others. Some of them are Capitol Heights citizens, some grew up in the town, and some are even students from neighboring areas. They each bring a unique perspective to their work and are all committed to making what might be the worst day of your life better.
