Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department Celebrates a Century of Service with Parade and Fire Helmet Blessing

Helmet Blessing

Wheels will roll, lights will flash and sirens will sound in celebration this weekend in Capitol Heights, Maryland. The Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 100th birthday with a parade through the Town of Capitol Heights on July 12, 2014.

Members of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department will participate in the parade and will also staff the event. Our neighbors , friends, past members, family and firefighters from near and far have been invited to join us for this once in a lifetime celebration. It’s a chance for us to commemorate this wonderful milestone for our department; we’re proud to have 100 years of service to our community as an incorporated department.

Units will stage starting at 10:30 a.m. at Doswell E. Brooks Elementary School and at 12 p.m. proceed down Brooke Road to Suffolk Avenue and then turn onto Central Avenue. They will pass by neighbors, friends, and family as they make their way to the judges’ stand near the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department.

We understand that apparatus from Capitol Heights history will participate in the event and families of past members will turn out to cheer the departments on including family members of: Past CHVFD and Prince George’s County Fire Chief Frank Briguglio, Past President John “Ike” Day, and Past Chief and President William A. Devine, Jr.

After the parade, participants are invited back to the firehouse for awards and a special ceremony. Firefighters have been asked to bring their fire helmets for a “Blessing of the Helmets” ceremony by Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department Chaplain Dwayne Frost.

We are excited for this great event and look forward to seeing everyone there!
