Firefighter Phil Brown Receives the Norris J. Beard Junior Firefighter of the Year Award

Phil Brown - Junior Firefighter of the Year

One of youngest firefighters of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department , 17-year-old Capitol Heights resident Phil Brown works hard at being the best firefighter he can be. On Thursday, September 18, 2014, Phil was awarded the Norris J. Beard Junior Firefighter of the Year for 2013 during the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association’s Annual Convention.

The T.C. Williams High School Senior joined the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department in 2013 and is an asset to the department. Phil is certified in Firefighter I and will soon be registering for EMT-B. During his tenure with the department he has shown that he is a highly-motivated, disciplined, and dedicated member. During fiscal year 2014, Phil responded to over 400 calls for service while still managing all of his school work. He also participates in other company functions like fire prevention, community events, and fund raising activities. His eagerness to learn and professionalism is evident in everything he does. Phil is always seen checking the equipment upon reporting to the firehouse, helping new members learn where everything is on the apparatus, and practicing skills.

One day, Phil hopes to be fire chief in Prince George’s County. “Growing up in the neighborhood, I always saw fire trucks and ambulances go up and down the street. I decided that I wanted to do something positive by becoming a firefighter and motivating others to do positive things.” Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department President James McClelland comments, ” I am confident that Phil will attain that goal and lead his department well.”

Firefighter Brown carries on a proud tradition of previous Capitol Heights junior members including: Firefighter Terrence Faison, Firefighter James McClelland, Jr., Firefighter Thomas Russell, and Firefighter Joseph Howe who have all received the Norris J. Beard Junior Firefighter of the Year Award. He is also on his way to becoming a great fire service leader just as other Capitol Heights officers and members who have served in leadership roles in departments across the country.

Phil is a shining example for not only for the community but for his peers; the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department proudly salutes his commitment, self-discipline, and dedication to his craft, his community, and the citizens of the Town of Capitol Heights and Prince George’s County. Congratulations Phil on a well-deserved honor!
