The Town of Capitol Heights Made Capital of Maryland for a Day
The Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department was proud to welcome Governor Martin O’Malley, his cabinet and other state and local officials to the Town of Capitol Heights.
On April 15, 2010 Governor O’Malley designated Capitol Heights as the state capital for the day in commemoration of its 100th year anniversary. Since the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department has played a significant part in the town’s history, it was only fitting that today’s event was held at the fire station.
Upon his arrival at the station, the Governor greeted each of the 28 volunteers that were there to respond to emergencies, provide fire prevention and public education materials, and attend to the needs of the Governor and his staff during their visit.
Officials in attendance included the Honorable Darrell Miller of Capitol Heights, Mayor Pro Tem Renita Cason, Councilman Kito James, Councilman Nathaniel Buchanan, Former Mayor Vivian Dodson, State Senator Nathaniel Exum, and State Delegates Joanne Benson and Carolyn J. B. Howard.
The cabinet meeting was conducted in front of a packed house and showcased some of the new and exciting things going on, not only in the town, but across the state of Maryland. Several of the officials highlighted the work of volunteers, like those at Company 5, who serve their communities.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Governor O’Malley presented Mayor Miller with a check for the town and a proclamation that officially made Capitol Heights “the capital for the day.”
Governor O’Malley took time to pose for a group photo with Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department members. He was presented with a CHVFD ball cap, which he was later seen sporting as the motorcade left the ramp of the station.
The members of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department were proud to host this important event in the town’s history.
