Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary has suffered another great loss within days of losing our current Ladies Auxiliary President. On the morning of October 27, 2009 past Ladies Auxiliary President Evelyn Mockabee died in Palm Bay, Florida.
Mary joined the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary in 1991. She had served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary from 1997 through 2005 and again from 2008 until the time of her death. In September 1999, Mary was inducted into the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association Ladies Auxiliary’s Hall of Fame.
On July 27, 2009 the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department, the citizens of Capitol Heights, and surrounding communities learned through an official Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department press release that career staffing would be removed from the Capitol Heights fire station (Station 805) on August 2, 2009. While we have not received official notice from the department, we have petitioned Fire Chief Eugene Jones to reconsider his decision and have asked our local and state leaders for their support.
On Saturday, May 2, 2009 members of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department participated in their second year at the Harlem Renaissance Festival.
Since its inception in 1989, both the career and volunteer members of Company 5 have taken a very active role in the Annual Christmas in April project.
On Tuesday, March 12, 2009, twenty-three (23) career and volunteer personnel from the station participated in a live fire training exercise at the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute (MFRI) at the University of Maryland, College Park. The drill was a perfect opportunity for crews to hone their skills and learn new things.
The Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department has submitted a grant proposal to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for a new pumper as part of the fiscal year 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. If awarded, this grant will be used to purchase a new pumper to replace our aging front line pumper, a 1989 FMC. The total budget for the grant proposal is in the amount of $390,000.
On October 11, 2008, the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department conducted its Annual Fire Prevention and Life Safety Day from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
On Saturday, September 20, 2008, Fire Safety House 5 took part in an event at the Gethsemane Baptist Church. The church, located at 2500 Enterprise Road in Mitchellville, held its very first health fair.
