The department is proud of Ross, Austen and Todd. We congratulate them on achieving their degrees. We wish them much success and hope that as they go about their life pursuits, they remain members of this department, no matter where their careers take them, and they participate when they can.
CHVFD Lifetime Member Preaches Wildfire Preparedness Out West
Jim joined the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department in 1983 and has held various line officer positions including Deputy Chief. Next year, Jim will celebrate his 30th anniversary with the CHVFD. Jim moved his permanent residence to Colorado after he retired from the U.S. Department of the Interior a few years ago.
Crews Participate in Joint Exercise
On Thursday, April 26, 2012 members of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department participated in a joint exercise with Andrews Air Force Base. The purpose of the exercise was to ensure that government agencies at every level are prepared to take coordinated action to protect the public in the event of an actual disaster in the National Capital Region (NCR).
CHVFD Recognizes Two Members During National Volunteer Week
President Barack Obama issued a proclamation declaring April 15 – 21, 2012 as “National Volunteer Week.” In celebration of “National Volunteer Week,” the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department presented two members with Special Achievement Awards in recognition of their extraordinary service to the department and the communities we serve.
CHVFD Commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Supports Neighborhood Unity
On Monday, January 16, 2012, the Town of Capitol Heights hosted a Community March to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. The event, “Reclaiming the Dream – Uniting the Community,” was organized to empower residents and provide information to the community. The march through the Town will feature faith based, business and community leaders including Fire Chief Bashoor, members of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department and other members of the department.

Last Surviving World War II Veteran Member, Ernest “Ernie” Moreland, Dies at the Age of 92
Ernie joined the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department in 1936 and served his department for more than seven decades, giving new meaning to the term “lifetime member.” He held many offices within the department including President from 1957 through 1962; and the office of Treasurer.
Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department Mourns the Loss of Florence “Flossy” Harrison
Flossy was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary and served has the Ladies Auxiliary President in 1957 and 1958. Her husband Howard “Gabby” Harrison was a lifetime member of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department.
