National Guard Troops Deployed to Station 5 to Help With Emergencies

Two (2) back to back blizzards hit the Washington, DC area bringing more than 25″ of snow, crippling the area. These snow storms became known as “Snowmageddon.” National Guard troops and Humvees were deployed throughout the area. One Humvee operated out of the Capitol Heights fire station for several days making sure that emergency medical crews could get to sick or injured people and that fire apparatus could be pulled from the snow if they became stuck. Firefighter Dwayne Frost, Sr. was assigned to ride with them to operate the portable radio and act as the navigator.

Honoring to Our Veterans

The Veterans’ Page, on the department’s website goes live on Veteran’s Day 2009 to recognize and honor the service and sacrifices made by our military veteran members. Each year since the debut of this page enhancements have been made as we identify additional veterans and find out more about them. The Veterans’ Page features information on members who served during the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, War on Terror and peacetime service.

Career Staffing Removed by County Fire Chief

Prince George’s County Fire Chief Eugene Jones removes all career staffing from the fire station as part of a new staffing plan. Over the course of next few months Chief Jones reassigned the County owned pumper (Engine 51) to the new St. Joseph Fire Station 6, the ladder truck (Truck 5) to Ritchie – Station 37, the paramedic ambulance to District Heights – Station 26 and placed the Medical Care Support Unit out of service. The Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department continued to operate an engine company (Engine 52) and a basic ambulance (Ambulance 58). The department initiated a massive recruitment drive, so that we could continue to provide service to the Town of Capitol Heights. We continue to recruit and train new members to this day. WE are still here!
